Port of Trajan

3d model and reconstruction

Port of Trajan

The reconstruction of the dock of the Port of Trajan is possible through an analysis of the masonry that still projects from the terrain.

Today the sea doesn’t reach this area. However, despite the vegetation, the structures are still visible therefore we are able to return the sea to an area that today is covered by land. In this way we can show how there were ships, there were moorings, and great storehouses that received goods from the Empire.

Short history of

Port of Trajan

The new requirements to supply a city increasingly expanding and the environmental insecurity of the Port of Claudius, too exposed to storms, led Trajan in deciding the construction of a new port of Rome.

The emperor commissioned the architect Apollodorus of Damascus, who built a reservoir of hexagonal shape in an area of about 32 hectares with an artificial canal connecting it to the Tiber River.

The work was done in 100-102 AD. Currently the port is located about 3 km from the coast, near the modern airport of the capital.
