Domus of Colombarone

3d model and reconstruction

Domus of Colombarone

The idea of elaborating a virtual model which could show the hypothetical appearance of the Roman villa of Colombarone was conceived in order to provide a tool for guidance and support in reading the archaeological remains still visible today as part of the museum site. The creation of the virtual model was assigned to Altair 4 Multimedia.

Through the analysis of the excavation data and the collaboration with the team of archaeologists working on the project, the studio elaborated a virtual model able to give the fullest representation possible of the architectural structures of the ancient building, including also those parts where information was partially lacking.
In particular, special attention was given to supplement with compatible iconographic models those parts and data which are no longer available today, thus making the reading of the virtual model more understandable and accessible also to non-experts. With regard to the parts of the villa still in place today, such as the mosaic pavements and walls, meticulous work was carried out to recreate the missing areas by developing them coherently with the surviving parts. In order to convey to viewers the right perception of a highly decorated environment, the virtual restoration of the sumptuous mosaics of the villa also required the creation of adequate frescoed surfaces based on coherent iconographic models. The animation of the 3D model was then put into place in order to propose the information and data collected in an easily accessible way, employing visual language through a very simple yet contemporary approach. The introductory part of the video locates the archaeological site of Colombarone in its historical and geographical context. The images then explore the villa through a visit of the areas of the site, with present and past merging together to recompose the ancient construction. Viewers can see the rooms of the villa unfolding in front of their eyes, with the vivid colours of the frescoes and the mosaic tiles all in place. As in a time lapse video, the sun then travels across the sky, thus showing the site at different times of the day and evoking the passage of time.

Apart from the images in the viewer, on request, it possible to have videos or other images taken from different perspectives.

Short history of

Domus of Colombarone

Following the evidence of the first archaeologist interested in the site, the 18th century Pesaro scholar Annibale degli Abbati Olivieri, while he was researching the basilica of San Cristoforo ad Aquilam where Pope Zacharia and Exarch Eutiche had met, a splendid late-Roman villa with a porticoed hall, two banqueting halls, many residential parts and two spas was unearthed.

The excavations have brought back to light thirteen centuries of history reconstructed and documented in the Colombarone site: the villa which was inhabited from the middle of the 3rd century to the middle of the 6th century when the paleo-Christian basilica was built over the guest wing; the medieval parish church; the small church built in the 18th century, demolished and rebuilt further down the valley in the following century.
