Short history of

The Dome of the Duomo in Florence

The conceptual and practical distinction between the ideation phase as opposed to execution, had remarkable consequences especially in architectural terms,. In actual fact, from that moment, the architect was in charge only of the design of the work, or planning and drafting a project highlighting its intellectual function; the practical implementation of this “know-how” was then entrusted to others.

The role played by Filippo Brunelleschi in the building of the dome of Santa Maria del Fiore (1418-36) is definitely an archetype of the completed separation between project and execution in an architectural project.

The restyling of ancient principles led to a completely new approach to architecture, characterized by clearly defined volumes, underlining of surfaces and anticated frameworks, showing a strong rejection of what would later be termed “Gothic” .

Regularity and symmetry, proportion and simplicity in composition with the free interplay of few, basic geometric shapes such as the square and semi-circle were the guidelines of Renaissance architecture.
